Speckle Park in Commercial Pen Show at Farmfair International

A pen of ten Speckle Park influence bred heifers competed last weekend in the Farmfair Top 10 Commercial Pen of 10 Bred Heifer Show and Sale on November 11th and 12th in Edmonton, Alberta. The Speckle Park entry came from the Clarindy Cattle Company of Cindy and Clarence Beeching in Coronation, Alberta. Cindy and Clarence are members of the CSPA.

The show and sale included twenty one pens of commercial bred heifers reflecting Red Angus, Black Angus, Simmental and Shorthorn genetics. The Clarindy Cattle Company’s pen of ten was described as Speckle Park Simmental cross.

All of the pens consisted of excellent heifers and each pen was very consistent within itself. The quality of Cindy’s pen fit right in with all the others, except for the colour of course.

After the judging was completed the People’s Choice placings were announced. The Speckle Park pen won third in the People’s Choice! Congratulations, Cindy!

The pens were then sold as pens of ten. The champion pen (Simmental x Angus) sold for $1750 each. The reserve champion pen (Simmental x Red Angus) sold for $1600 each. The People’s Choice pen (Simmental x Simmental x Red Angus) sold for the same price. The Speckle Park pen sold for $1500 each as did all of the other pens. Only one pen sold for less at $1450.

The average weights of the heifers in each pen went as high as 1268 pounds. Twelve pens averaged weights in the 1100 pound range. Five pens were just barely over the 1000 pounds. As to be expected the Speckle Park pen was the lightest at 915 pounds.

Congratulations and our respect are owed to Cindy and Clarence for breaking the trail for Speckle Park into this kind of commercial show and sale.

Farmfair will likely have another commercial bred heifer show and sale next year. If anyone is interested in the experience, drop Cindy Beeching an email. If anyone is interested in the commercial show and sale at Agribition, Debbie Spencer would like to help something get started for Speckle Park at Canadian Western Agribition. Email addresses for both Cindy and Debbie are in the directories on the CSPA website and in the CSPA hard copy directory.

For those who are looking for Speckle Park firsts, it is safe to say this is the first time a pen of ten bred Speckle Park influence heifers have competed in a commercial pen show. (A few years ago a pen of Speckle Park bulls was exhibited by Fred Courtney in the commercial pen show at Agribition.)
